MACP teaches soldiers close combat rifle fighting techniques. Photodisc/Photodisc/Getty Images. The U. S. Army's Basic Combatives Course trains soldiers in the basics of hand- to- hand combat. Level 1 is the first stage of the Modern Army Combatives Program established in 1. Ranger Battalion. Close combat is now one of the 4. Warrior Core Tasks in the Warrior Ethos that underpins Army values. The Army states that one of the characteristics of a warrior is that he is ready to close with the enemy; close combat training helps prepare for this. Combatives Training Schedule. Level 1 training lasts for five days. The aim of the course is to teach a systematic approach to fighting and training at close quarters. Soldiers learn close combat techniques, drills and skills in half- hour practical exercise classes that run throughout each day. They also watch films and attend lectures covering various training techniques. Evaluation, assessment and graduation take place on Day Five. Combatives Techniques. Fight strategies in combatives have three key stages: close the distance, gain dominant position and finish the fight. Training starts with ground grappling to teach the basics then moves onto more difficult standing techniques. Soldiers learn a range of defensive escape techniques to help them get into a dominant position in a close combat fight; they then learn offensive skills. Techniques covered in the course include fighting with rifles, control standing, chokes, rolling, strikes, pummeling, mounts and hooks. Drills, Tests and Exams. Four primary tests occur in Level 1 of the MACP. The first is a drill that typically takes place on Day Three of the course. On Day Five, soldiers take an additional React to Contact Drill, a written exam and a practical technique test. Questions on the written test examine the soldier's understanding of the course and can cover anything from the history of combat training and the MACP program to fight techniques. The technique test evaluates five ground and five standing tasks chosen by the instructor. Soldiers have to pass four tests out of both sets of tasks. Graduating From Level 1 Combatives. To graduate from Level 1 training, soldiers have to complete the mid- week drill and pass the React to Contact drill on the final day. They must also pass both the written exam and the technique test. The final requirement is based on attendance - - soldiers cannot graduate if they miss more than two hours of courses in total.
